New Superintendent Hired for 2017-18
The Axtell Board of Education has approved a new two-year contract with Mr. Robert Gregory to serve as superintendent beginning July 1, 2017. Mr. Gregory has recently served at Cambridge for six years as superintendent retiring from there in 2016. He has also been a secondary principal at Bayard for eight years prior to his Cambridge job, and was a teacher and coach at Wilber-Clatonia and Alliance before becoming an administrator. Altogether, he has 30 years of public school experience. He has degrees in education from Chadron State, Doane, and UNK. Currently, Mr. Gregory serves as a consultant for NAEP providing assessment work to schools in this area of the state and neighboring states.
Mr. Gregory has been hired as a full-time superintendent replacing Mr. Wickham who has served in a part-time capacity for the last five years. This will move the administrative FTE back to 2.0 for the first time in many years. Many patrons and staff members have requested the move back to a full-time superintendent which can be more easily accommodated now as the budget can support that position better at this point than was the case five years ago.
Although Mr. Gregory applied for early retirement a year ago, he is very excited to get back to doing what he enjoys most--being a superintendent. He has many years ahead of him in his new endeavor and he is excited about relocating to the Axtell area. I’m sure you may have an opportunity to meet Mr. Gregory later this spring. Please welcome him with the same exuberance you welcomed me five years ago.
Steven Wickham, Superintendent
